People all over the world live with chronic pain every day. While some may go to a medical walk in clinic and follow their specific instructions, others work based on assumptions they’ve made regarding the pain and how best to manage it. By 2030, for every 10 baby boomers six will be managing a chronic pain condition. With so many people experiencing the same thing, there is bound to be a lot of misinformation circulated. Let’s take a look at what holds up and what is pure fiction.

  1. Myth: For back pain, you need to rest often and avoid exercise.

Fact: Staying active is actually better for long-term pain management. Your doctor may recommend that you rest for a short period of time, but if you go on strict bed rest your body will become unfamiliar with movement and every time you do move will be worse. If you continue with your daily activities, your body will be conditioned to regular movement.Although some people may not be fit for regular exercise, four in 10 people try it to relieve lower back pain, so looking into low-impact activities may be beneficial for your long-term health.
  2. Myth: Alternative treatments are a waste of time and money.

Fact: Conventional treatments, such as pills and surgeries, are typically prescribed by doctors, but you can ask about other treatments like massage, oils, and acupuncture. Taking pills everyday can make you reliant on the medication to feel your best and they can have a negative affect on your stomach lining. Turning to less invasive, more natural treatments may be easier on your body. CBD oil is an up and coming alternative to conventional medicine for many people. It is a naturally occurring chemical compound of cannabis that does not induce any mind-altering effects, but does help greatly with pain relief. Of course, ask your doctor to ensure that you will not have any negative reactions to alternative therapies.
  3. Myth: Chronic pain comes with aging and is something you have to deal with.

Fact: If you are living with chronic pain, do not accept that you have to suffer with it. Although our bodies need more attention and care as we age, communities everywhere have solutions to help. You can go to any number of places in your area, including medical walk in clinics, physical therapy offices, and referencing a doctors directory to find the right option for you. Upwards of 40% of people with long-term lower back pain haven’t seen a doctor and that is only hurting their health. When you hurt, do not hesitate to find a medical walk in clinic right away to get your life where you want it to be.
  4. You have to live in your body every day, so you need it to be in optimal condition. It seems easy to brush off pain and live with it, but in reality you can seek all kinds of treatment or help that is fit for your needs and lifestyle.
