Reflex sympathetic dystrophy, or RSD, is a medical condition that can occur because of trauma to the nerves of the arms or legs. Also known as complex regional pain syndrome, or CRSP, it is a chronic pain disorder which presents symptoms such as sensitivity to light touch, skin color and temperature changes, swelling, weakness, muscle atrophy, and depression. Fortunately, there is a treatment for RSD.
Hyperbaric treatment for RSD has show to improve the symptoms of this condition including reduction of swelling and pain levels. So, how does this treatment for RSD work? Through the pressurized oxygen that is passed into the body during this treatment for RSD, both the limb and the brain are affected, resulting in healing. Treatment for RSD can decrease the inflammation and increase blood flow to the arm or leg bringing relief to the patient. Hyperbaric oxygen treatment for RSD can also reduce the formation of fibrous tissue that can cause discomfort or pain.
In addition to the treatment for RSD pain, hyperbaric oxygen therapy can be used as a treatment for radiation necrosis. Hyperbaric treatments are used along with anticoagulation therapy to treat this medical condition.
Chronic Lyme disease treatment can also be treated with hyperbaric oxygen chamber treatments similar to the treatment for RSD. Symptoms of Lyme disease include feature, headache, fatigue, and a skin rash. If left untreated, Lyme disease can spread to the heart, joints, and the nervous system.
Other medical conditions that can be treated by therapies similar to the treatment for RSD include chronic fatigue syndrome and AIDS.
Many people wonder how the treatment for RSD and other conditions work. A patient is generally put into a hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber that is a hard shelled pressure vessel. These chambers can be of either flexible or rigid construction and is a means of delivering 100% pressurized oxygen into the body of the patient.
There are many other benefits to hyperbaric therapies including a strong immune system and improved circulation. Body detoxification can also occur during the therapies for the treatment of RSD. This occurs when the pressurized oxygen that is applied to the body forces out impurities.
